Best Local Dust-Up Over A Polarizing Water-Borne Structure

Tie: Friendship Trail Bridge & St. Petersburg Pier

On the St. Pete side we've got the Pier, a once postcard-perfect embodiment of the colorful, touristy beachside lifestyle, aged beyond its design. On the Hillsborough-meets-Pinellas side we've got what was once a functional recreation destination grown dangerous with time and erosion. That the complete destruction of either was even considered at all seems ludicrous to some; some can't wait to see them updated, changed, redesigned to reflect a more contemporary Florida, while others can't imagine them changing at all. But one thing is sure: the future of these two iconic local landmarks has ignited the passions of tens of thousands of residents who actually care what their community looks like, feels like and has to offer, and that can't mean anything but good for the social health of the Bay area.
