Seminole Heights Branch Library

Overpopular and wee, the half-century-old Seminole Heights Branch Library accepted its final patron in 2012: a bulldozer. Last spring, its two-story, triple-sized replacement opened double doors beneath a broad brick portico fronting Central Avenue. The spiffy new prairie-style structure sports stained-glass windows and a reading porch with adjacent children’s room. The big new meeting rooms have already hosted such events as a live WMNF radio variety show and literary performances by Improbable Athenaeum, which will bring free play and poetry readings to the library one Saturday afternoon each month starting in October. Part artist enclave, part low-income utopia, Seminole Heights finally has an official cultural center. 4711 N. Central Ave., Tampa, 813-273-3652
