Commissioner Beckner succeeded in ridding the county of the stench of the 2005 gay pride ban, but he also deserves kudos for fighting the good fight on a number of other progressive issues. When the Hillsborough Area Regional Transit board rejected a relatively mainstream bus ad by the Florida Council on Islamic Relations (CAIR), the commissioner valiantly defended the Islamic community against a member of the public intent on spreading the hate.
