Elijah Dukes Goes Around the Bend, St. Petersburg Times

Truth be known, Dukes was probably around the bend a long time ago, but some enterprising work by Times reporters Abbie Vansickle and Eduardo Encina brought to light just how much of a thug the now-in-limbo Devil Rays outfielder really is. He threatened the life of his estranged wife, NiShea Gilbert, who played a voicemail message for the reporters that found Dukes saying, “You dead, dawg. I ain’t even bullshittin’. Your kids, too.” (One of the kids, a girl, was his.) He sent her a text message with a photo of a handgun and threatened her at her workplace — an elementary school. Dukes continued to fuck up almost daily, making great copy, until the Rays finally op-tioned him to an inactive spot in the minor leagues. This asshole would’ve probably engineered his own demise at some point, but credit the Times coverage for bringing the whole disgusting mess out into the open.
