BEST ST. PETE DOWNTOWNER

Mattison's Bistro

Set in an ideal locale across the street from BayWalk and close to St. Pete's verdant swath of parkland, Mattison's is a swell place to hang and eat. The food does not occupy the culinary cutting edge, but it's carefully prepared and delish, and entails a satisfying assortment of familiar favorites in a clean, stylish setting with a sophisticated air. Start with excellent soup and salad, and try as an entrée Idaho pesto-crusted trout, topped with charred tomato and Chardonnay butter, and served with jasmine rice and veggies; finish with caramel macadamia nut tart. Adjourn to a concert at Jannus Landing or walk over to The Pier and take the elevator to the top for a nightcap. Or hit the rockin' bars and clubs that have suddenly popped up like mushrooms after a rainstorm all over downtown St. Pete.

Mattison's, An American Bistro, 111 Second Ave. N.E., St. Petersburg, 727-895-2200 or www.mattisons.com.
