Veggie Cubans (the sandwiches, unless Rubio’s a vegan) suck. The answer to the order “vegetarian Cuban, please” is usually… pickles. Lots and lots of pickles. Not so at St. Pete’s Bodega, where the answer is “cook the tofu in a way that makes it taste like ham or pork, and then use that instead.” St. Pete vegetarians already know this, so consider this a rousing endorsement of the world’s best vegetarian Cuban for all you Cuban sandwich aficionados out there whose cardiologist has said, “Uh, dude, have a salad every now and then.”
