Christie Lenee

Keep an eye on USF undergrad Christie Lenee. The singer/songwriter/guitarist is pursuing degrees in both jazz guitar performance and composition, but judging by her self-titled album of live, mostly acoustic recordings, the young woman already has chops to spare. She bounds from folk to classical, while dropping jazz, blues and jam-band-friendly funk lines along the way. She even wilds out on occasion and unleashes the hot, heavy licks that make classic rock fans drool. And there's a warmth to her playing that suggests the artist has a lot more to say than simply "look how good I am." As for Lenee's singing, I'm not completely sold. Her vocal phrasing and tone recall those of Joni Mitchell, but there's a shrillness to her upper register that's rather off-putting. 3 stars
