The effort to create a strong-mayor form of government in Hillsborough County may be on the rocks. Two sources (one of whom is admittedly anti-strong mayor) tell Blurbex that the rejection rate for petitions to put the question on the ballot is running at about 12 percent. If that holds steady, it would not give proponents at Taking Back Hillsborough County enough valid petitions to get on the ballot this fall.
Supervisor of Elections Buddy Johnson would not reveal the rejection rate, saying Friday morning that "there’s no conclusion yet. From the beginning, we’ve needed the time to do the job in the right way and we’re not finished with our work yet."
