After Men's Journal slighted St. Pete and Tampa late last year in ranking them among the most depressed cities in the U.S., it's understandable that some Tampa Bay area residents might be hesitant to hear about their ranking in another media-driven survey. But this time Tampa gets some love. In the Daily Beast's ranking of the 20 most tolerant cities in the U.S., Tampa squeaks in at #20.
Posted on the day that Americans celebrated the life of Martin Luther King, Jr., the Tina Brown-edited website says that it was the perfect time to test the ideals of tolerance and civil rights.
The site said that in order to determine which urban centers are havens for tolerance, they asked, "Where are diverse urban populations matched by high levels of acceptance and peaceful relations?"
To determine that, they limited the cities under consideration to be those with populations greater than 250,000 and considered three main criteria:
