Tampa Bay Writers Network honors the life, words and activism of Florida native Johnson with God's Trombones: A Celebration of James Weldon Johnson. Local actors, poets and ministers perform dramatic readings from his important poetic work, God's Trombones: Seven Negro Sermons in Verse, trombone player Buster Cooper provides the musical interludes, visual renderings of the Aaron Douglas images from Johnson's 1927 edition of the text are on display, and a discussion with Humanities scholar Dr. Julie Buckner Armstrong follows the performance. 7 p.m., The Studio@620, St. Petersburg, free admission (donations of canned goods for area food banks appreciated), 727-895-6620.
