In the most recent issue of CL, we write about how some local and state Republican candidates are jumping on the issue of illegal immigration in their campaigns, but seemingly only in reaction to Arizona's newly crafted legislation, which has led to a new national debate on the volatile issue.

Now some Republicans already in the state legislature, who during the legislative session that ran from March to May didn't bring up the topic, are now calling for such a law.

At a town-hall meeting on Tuesday, Melbourne House Republican Ritch Workman says he wants to introduce a similar bill in the state legislature, according to Florida Today.

"We are a sovereign nation of 50 sovereign states," Workman told a crowd of about 70 at a town hall meeting Tuesday at Melbourne City Hall. "We have to remove ourselves from the bosom of the federal government."

The immigration issue was among the most heated discussions during two town hall forums in the morning and evening Tuesday, which the three legislators conducted to review the last legislative session and to get public feedback.

"I believe it is a states' rights issue," Workman said Tuesday evening referring to the immigration debate.
