Freebie: Artistic Refreshment

Downtown St. Petersburg Gallery Walk

The Downtown St. Petersburg Gallery Walk

In Mays past, the St. Petersburg Downtown Art Association's (DAA) gallery walk incorporated offerings from local restaurants. This year, with snacks having been a feature of April's walk, May's outing returns to a pure art event.

Well, almost. There are still the requisite drinks served at receptions for exhibits whose openings coincide with the art walk.

Take a Walk on the Art Side takes place Saturday, May 11, with DAA's 21 participating galleries staying open from 5:30 to 9 p.m.

Sure, the artworks on display and the extended hours are reason enough to come out, but one's appreciation for fine art can always do with some lubricating.

For two years, Milagros, a downtown gourmet soap shop, has poured one of the tastiest liquid inducements to attend the walk. Milagros' margaritas are made from frozen limeade, Jose Cuervo, cheap beer and ice; the perfect drink for a summery evening of gallery strolling.

Last May they served about 15 pitchers' worth — that's several gallons of tequila you artsy-fartsy lushes.

DAA galleries include The Arts Center, Gallery Enormous, Florida Craftsmen Gallery and The Glass Canvas Gallery, all found along Central Avenue and neighboring streets in downtown St. Petersburg. For a complete list of galleries and addresses, contact The Glass Canvas Gallery at 727-821-6767.

Milagros is at 505 Central Ave., St. Petersburg (727-821-7555).

The gallery walk always takes place the second Saturday of each month.
