Fun Under the Clearwater Sun

FESTIVAL

April isn't a month with a whole heck of a lot going on, and May's not too great either, especially in Clearwater, which, if you ask me, has very little to offer aside from the Church of Scientology, shopping, some restaurants and a lovely expanse of beach. However, for the past 53 years, the city has enticed seasonal visitors to extend their winter vacations while luring the Bay area's non-Clearwater population with its Fun 'N Sun Festival, a 17-day celebration featuring numerous events all over Clearwater. This week's highlights include: the Lexus of Clearwater/Lexus of Tampa Bay 11th Annual Smooth Jazz Fest featuring headliners like Mindy Abair and Chaka Khan (Fri.-Sat., April 21-22, Coachman Park, $20); the Florida International Reptile Show (Fri.-Sat., April 22-23, The Harborview Center, $8); one of The Florida Orchestra's notoriously spectacular outdoor concerts and fireworks shows (7:30-9 p.m. Sun., April 23, Coachman Park, free); and a Moonlight Meanderings Night Walk and Campfire complete with live entertainment, s'mores and refreshments (7 p.m. Wed., April 26, Moccasin Lake Nature Park, $4). April 21-May 7, Clearwater, www.myclearwater.com.
