A day after announcing that the Firestone Grand Prix “is a go,” and that ”we need to go about our lives,” St. Petersburg mayor Rick Kriseman announced this morning that general admission will not be allowed at this weekend’s race due to concerns over the coronavirus pandemic.
Kriseman made the announcement at a news conference Thursday morning, and followed up with a series of comments on Twitter.
“I don't make this decision lightly,” tweeted Kriseman. “I strongly believe life must carry on, as best we are able. But the reality now is that's just not possible. I am disappointed. I love this race. But I love this city and our residents more. Thank you for your trust.”

The mayor also stated that the race may be completely cancelled or postponed. Kriseman said he will speak with promoters and Indy Car, and determine the fate of the event at a Thursday afternoon press conference.
Yesterday, it was also announced that fans would not be allowed at Tampa’s March Madness games held at Amalie Arena.
UPDATE: The City of St. Petersburg and officials with the Firestone Grand Prix have officially closed the event to all spectators. The announcement was made in a Thursday afternoon tweet.
