General Stanley McChrystal relieved of command - Petraeus taking over in Afghanistan

The Associated Press was the first out of the shoot to report that General Stanley McCrystal has been relieved of command of the war in Afghanistan - and been replaced by the most famous general in the country, David Petraeus, U.S. Army General and current commander of U.S. Central Command based in Tampa.

McChrystal was dumped after comments by himself and close aids that were disparaging to President Obama and other members of the administration's war efforts on Afghanistan in the current issue of Rolling Stone.

McChrystal has been the architect of the current counterinsurgency strategy in Afghanistan, a strategy that President Obama bought into late last year when he announced that he was escalating troop levels in that country, though he simultaneously announced that the U.S. would begin pulling some of those troops out by July of 2011.
