Creative Loafing's 2013 Fiction Contest invites Florida writers to send us their wildest imaginings. The theme is "Wild" — and that's all we'll say. Entrants are free to interpret the theme any way they like, and incorporate it into their stories any way they like.
This year's judge is the prize-winning short story writer and novelist Karen Brown (Pins and Needles, The Longings of Wayward Girls). The judge's prize is $500, readers' choice wins $250, and entry dates are Oct. 31-Nov. 27.

CL's Fiction Contest is limited to Florida residents, though students who are not full-time state residents but are enrolled in Florida schools and colleges are also eligible. Maximum length is 3,000 words, and stories must be the original work of the entrant, unpublished and not currently under consideration for publication. Entries (up to three per person) must be received by 5 p.m., Wed., Nov. 27.
The top 10 stories as chosen by CL will be posted online at cltampa.com/FictionContest2013 on Dec. 4. Judges will make their decisions based on originality, style and literary quality. Authors' names will be concealed during judging to preserve objectivity.
Karen Brown will choose the winning story from the top 10, and readers will be given the opportunity to make their choice by voting on the top 10 online Dec. 4-11. CL will announce both the judge’s winner and the readers’ choice on Dec. 18 during a reading at CL Space.
