Green Community Calendar weekend events: Free compost workshop, beekeeping course, markets and more

[image-1]Land O’Lakes Saturday Market- Every Saturday; 9 am-2 pm (through May). The Land O’Lakes Saturday Market is a weekly community event with live music. Land O Lakes Saturday Market donates profits to the Heritage Park Foundation and the Suncoast Harvest Food Bank. We are located at the Land O’ Lakes Community Center, on the west side of US 41 – Land O Lakes Blvd., three miles north of SR 54 (across from the Land O Lakes Post Office).

Angelus Hudson "Permablitz" Event- Saturdays; 9 am-1 pm. Code Green Community is hosting a neighborhood permablitz event benefiting The Angelus, charity and home for severely handicapped persons who are not able to care for themselves. What is a permablitz? It's where members of a community get together to lend a good old fashioned helping hand to provide an edible garden, create a rain water harvesting system, or work on a project that helps the neighborhood become more self-sufficient. Permablitzes are free events, open to the public, where you learn a lot, get some exercise, and have a wonderful time. 12413 Hudson Ave., Hudson. Guided Hike at Weedon Island Preserve- Every Saturday; 9-11 am. Guided hikes through coastal mangrove and upland ecosystems of the Preserve are held on most Saturdays of the month. Join us to learn about the coastal environment and the early residents of Weedon Island Preserve. Be sure to bring water and a snack for this 2-hour hike. A hat and closed-toe shoes are also recommended. Reserve your space by 2 pm on the Friday prior to the tour of choice. This event is free and open to the public. Pre-registration is required. Guided Hike at Brooker Creek Preserve- Every Saturday; 9-11 am. Take a walk through time each Saturday morning on a guided hike along the Education Center Trail. Join us for this 0.75 mile walk as we look at how the land has changed over time and discuss the ecological footprints left by those changes. Sturdy closed-toe shoes are a must, and water and a hat are recommended. Pre-registration is required by 12:00 noon on the Friday before the hike. Admission: Free. Free Compost Workshop and Garden Tours of Organic Living Inc.- Saturday, January 15; 10 am. This is the winter season and what a good time to compost for your garden! And this gets your garden soil ready for planting those cool weather crops and again for those hot summer crops too. Here you can learn 3 ways to compost for your garden and flower beds. Organic Living Inc. also invites you to tour the organic gardens of Jai and Mike Hambly. Come see what we are preparing for the spring gardens. USF Botanical Gardens Beekeeping Course- Saturday, January 15; 10 am-12 pm. Bees are a very important part of our sustainable world. Learn all about bees and beekeeping in this monthly course. Upon completion, participants will be able to complete the State beekeeping certification. Join the USFBG Advanced Master Beekeeper, Gary Van Cleef, on the 3rd Saturday of each month at 10am. Tracking Wildlife Workshop- Saturday, January 15; 11 am. Shhh, and watch your step! Come join Sensing Nature® biologists to learn about Florida wildlife and their footfalls. Find out why “reading” their tracks is an important story for us to understand. Bring a parent, grandparent or friend and together create a plaster cast of an animal track to take home! Corey Avenue Sunday Market- Every Sunday, 10 am-2 pm. The Corey Sunday Market will boast 2 produce vendors, local arts and crafts, live music, foods and fun!  Located between Blind Pass Rd and Boca Ciega Drive, Corey Ave will be blocked off for a safe shopping day at the market. Corey merchants and restaurants will be open for business as well, lending a fabulous addition to your normal market venues. From antiques to boutiques, dog stores and more, the Corey Sunday Market is the one to visit every Sunday during the fall and winter seasons. Sweetwater Organic Community Farm's Sunday Market- Every Sunday (through May); 12-4 pm. Our on-site market features organic produce harvested fresh from our own farm, as well as organic fruits and veggies from other farms. Every week you can enjoy native plants, organic vegetable transplants, and unique products from green vendors and artisans including; fresh baked goods, local honey, homemade soaps, handmade jewelry, organic coffees, veggie burgers and fruit smoothies. You can also enjoy our wonderful 'Sweetwater Sunday Music Series' featuring some of the best local musicians and our popular open mic. So come check it out!
