Guided Hike at Weedon Island Preserve- Every Saturday; 9-11 am. Guided hikes through coastal mangrove and upland ecosystems of the Preserve are held on most Saturdays of the month. Join us to learn about the coastal environment and the early residents of Weedon Island Preserve. Be sure to bring water and a snack for this 2-hour hike. A hat and closed-toe shoes are also recommended. Reserve your space by 2 pm on the Friday prior to the tour of choice. This event is free and open to the public. Pre-registration is required. Guided Hike at Brooker Creek Preserve- Every Saturday; 9-11 am. Take a walk through time each Saturday morning on a guided hike along the Education Center Trail. Join us for this 0.75 mile walk as we look at how the land has changed over time and discuss the ecological footprints left by those changes. Sturdy closed-toe shoes are a must, and water and a hat are recommended. Pre-registration is required by 12:00 noon on the Friday before the hike. Admission: Free. Pinellas Energy Efficiency Project- Saturday, June 19; 10:30 am. Pinellas County Extension is conducting a citizens' education project with faculty from the University of Florida. This project aims to provide education and materials to our residents to help them save money on their energy bill. Energy savings benefit the end-user as well as the environment, everybody wins! This class will provide tips and incentives to making your home more energy efficient, while still maintaining the same level of comfort. Energy saving devices will be provided to all participants. First lady Michelle Obama rekindled interest in Victory Gardens last Spring when she and her family planted the seeds for the White House's largest 1,100-square-foot organic vegetable garden. Inspiring a host of suburban gardeners to do the same in economic hard times. Join us at Twigs and Leaves Nursery for a course on home stead gardening, and the challenges of gardening in Florida. Seasoned and aspiring organic gardeners can learn to plan and plant their own Victory Gardens in a one-of-a-kind, two-hour course. On a short walk, become acquainted with some of Floridas wildlife and their associated animal tracks, then learn how wildlife biologists use plaster casts to preserve them.
