Grin and Bear It

ART

Is your holiday smile beginning to feel a little forced? Then you may identify with the folks in David Kasdorf's digital/video installation "Smile (Just Breathe)" at The Arts Center, for which subjects were asked to smile non-stop for 20-minute stretches as part of "a painful examination of the pressure to please." Painful is right: Uninitiated visitors may think they're watching footage of people dying. Media distortions of reality also figure into Dante K. Hayes' interactive "Creata-Blackman" display and Robert Lawrence's "Un Message, Evidemment," about the making of a film. They're all part of Project Creo: Collaboration, the first show in the Creo series to be mounted at the Center instead of The Pier. Through Dec. 31, 719 Central Ave., St. Petersburg, free admission, 727-822-7872, www.artscenter.org.
