HCC partners with ZimRide to reduce greenhouse emissions and relieve parking issues

Zimride is a private, voluntary network available to HCC faculty, staff and students and makes it easy to find a friend or co-worker going the same way. It's simple. Have a car? Add your ride and split the costs by sharing your drive with others. No car, but need a ride? Add your ride request and get to where you want to go. Simply click and post where you’re coming from and when. HCC Zimride will help you find others making similar trips. HCC has also partnered with USF’s Zimride community. Users at both HCC and USF who choose to "Include Trusted Partners" will now be able to connect with one another.

This is just the most recent step in the college's commitment to sustainability. Future plans include a complete, all-campus energy audit and then reviewing the results to take further action. The mission of the HCC Sustainability Council is to transform Hillsborough Community College into a participating sustainable member of society. Through a partnership among students, faculty, staff, administrators, and community members, HCC seeks to establish and nurture an institutional culture of sustainability and promote excellence and leadership in education, innovation, and stewardship to achieve economic, social, and environmental sustainability that will ensure the health and well-being of present and future generations of people, both locally and globally.

Hillsborough Community College has taken a big step towards its goal of sustainability. As a direct result of a comprehensive study done by the HCC Sustainability Council, it was determined that over 70% of the greenhouse gasses generated by the college (including all facilities, employees, and students) came directly from transportation. Coupled with the need to address increased parking pressures on the campuses, research was performed to come up with solutions.

As a part of the ongoing sustainability efforts of the school, Hillsborough Community College announced the launch of HCC Zimride, HCC’s new private rideshare network. A nationally recognized program, Zimride is a way to coordinate the daily commute (or one-time ridesharing) for students, staff, and faculty. With fuel prices still at staggering levels, the program can offer some relief to the collective wallets of the HCC community. All online, it is accessible to anyone with an HCC email account.
