Herman Cain comes to Sarasota Sunday night

The candidate's failure to have a crafted response to the Libyan question could prove to be the campaign's death knell - something that some people might have thought would have happened a few weeks before, after reports surfaced that Cain allegedly harassed several women back when he headed the National Restaurant Association. Opinion is mixed on how severely that hurt the former pizza man, but let's just say his approval ratings haven't expanded with female voters.

But fears that his lack of readiness, particularly on foreign policy that was already apparent from previous debates and Sunday morning television appearances, seems to have solidified and struck a chord when it came to his fumbling on the Libya question, one of the biggest developments of the year for not only the U.S., but Western Europe , the Middle East and North Africa.

Although some polls show Cain starting to slump (and badly), others show just the opposite. In the average of major polls taken by Real Clear Politics, Cain is in a virtual three way tie with long time co-front runner Mitt Romney and the new guy in town, 67-year-old Newt Gingrich.

Gingrich is starting to get the front-runner treatment from the press, which has plenty to work with when it comes to the former House Speaker and his lucrative "consulting" career over the past 13 years since he left the House of Representatives in disgrace.

Politico is reporting that that Gingrich made $30,000 a month( consulting gig with Freddie Mac that ended after the housing meltdown forced the federal government to take over the failing mortgage giant.

Herman Cain made no discernible gaffes on Thursday.

Then again, the GOP presidential contender reduced his chances of being scrutinized severely when he backed off his scheduled one-hour question-and-answer session with the editorial board of the The Union Leader of New Hampshire that was to have been videotaped for the paper's website.

Although apparently there was some miscommunications between the paper and Team Cain, it was easy to deduce that the former Godfather's Pizza CEO might be a little gun shy, after his struggles in attempting to answer a question regarding President Obama's position on joining up with NATO forces to attack Libya last spring became the fodder for last night comedy shows all week long.

No word yet if Cain will meet up with the Sarasota Herald-Tribune's editorial page staff when he comes to the 941 area code this Sunday night, appearing at a fund-raiser at the Sarasota Municipal Auditorium at 6 p.m. (along with former Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour).
