In Brooksville, the Hernando Sportsman’s Club has encouraged new shooters to attend the firearms safety classes it plans to host over the coming months.

The introductory, orientation-style lessons with a lunch break will cover the basics of firearms safety at home and pistol-shooting fundamentals. Materials and equipment are included, as is live fire training on the outdoor range, which involves the use of a .22-caliber firearm, ammo, earplugs and eye protection.

Each class runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Upcoming courses are scheduled for Jan. 19, Feb. 6, Feb. 16, March 6 and March 16 (this one is women-only), and they cost $60 to attend.

Preregistration is required, so call the Hernando Sportsman’s Club to reserve a spot.

If desired, participants who successfully complete the firearms safety classes will leave with the documentation needed to apply for a Florida concealed-carry permit.
