While voting by mail has been a time-tested, widely used practice by just about everyone, including the president and his cabinet, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that during a pandemic Hillsborough County is about to send out a record amount of ballots.

Over the past few months, voting by mail has become increasingly political, as Trump and his staff have attempted to label the process as “rigged” without citing any evidence. But despite all the noise, Hillsborough County Supervisor of Elections announced Wednesday that it will go ahead with sending out over 290,000 ballots to domestic voters—a press release said that number is nearly double the amount sent in 2016.

“Voting by mail has become an increasingly popular option among Hillsborough County voters, and is especially encouraged now as a way for voters to vote safely without leaving home,” said the office.

Hillsborough County Supervisor of Elections says they’ve already sent out more than 4,300 ballots to overseas and absent military voters. But this Thursday, July 9, is the first day they’re legally allowed to send ballots to domestic voters.

If you would like a vote by mail ballot, you can still request one by visiting votehillsborough.org or by calling (813) 744-590.
