How to Take a Stand

FILM

If you like movies that make you think, the Ironweed Film Club's socially conscious movie nights may be just the thing. Next up: an award-winning documentary about the culture wars in small-town America. The Education of Shelby Knox chronicles a devout Christian teenager's quest to bring sex education to the Lubbock, Texas school system where teachers only lecture about abstinence amid a swell of teen pregnancies and STDs. Her relationship with her family, pastor and the entire community becomes even more strained after she proposes a gay-straight alliance in school. A hit with audiences across the country, the movie was an official selection of the 2005 Sundance Film Festival and won an Audience Award at the SXSW Film Festival. Like all Ironweed events at the Studio@620, beer and wine are available for purchase and popcorn is free. Fri., June 23, 8 p.m., 620 First Ave. S., St. Petersburg, $3 suggested donation, www.thestudioat620.com.
