Indie 101: Brendan McCreary

He also discusses his earliest musical influences: Django Reinhardt, Elvis Presley, Scott Joplin, George Gershwin, Paul Robeson, Paul Simon, Paul McCartney, Jelly Roll Morton, The Beatles, Wynton Marsalis, Branford Marsalis, The Neville Brothers, Janis Joplin, and many others. However, right this minute he is into Muse, Kanye West, and his lifelong inspiration, David Bowie.

Brendan says he isn’t preoccupied with how many MySpace friends he has, or how many YouTube hits he racks up. Instead, he explains, “what matters to me, is putting on the sweetest god-damned show I can possibly muster, in an attempt to blow the minds out of my audiences’ ear holes.”

Interesting fact: Brendan gets extremely nervous when doing live performances. After watching the videos below you will have a hard time believing. Oh performers and their “acting.” Anyway, Brendan says that he has played to audiences as big as 6,000 and as small as three, and every time he still wants to "piss or poop his pants."

I feel like you can’t really experience Brendan McCreary without witnessing his live performances. His humble attitude completely seals the deal. He states, “Right now, I’m at the bottom of the barrel, but I do feel that I am in the barrel, and that’s worth something. “

You will love Brendan McCreary if you love: Adam Levine, Mike Doughty, Sondre Lerche, and Matt Costa.

Brendan McCreary (who actually spells it BrEndAn) decided that he was going to become a rock star at the ripe age of 11.

He tells me, “It was the summer of my 8th grade year, and staring at the piano keys in my living room, I realized there was a lot more going on with music than I had any knowledge of, and for the first time in my life, I was actually interested in something other than action figures and dirt. I wanted to know about chord structures, and song forms. I wanted to write my own songs, and sing them and play them … and so I did: and there’s never been a doubt in my mind about it since." He continues, “I believe very strongly, that although I had always gravitated towards music from the time I popped out, the major reason I got into music was because no one told me to. It wasn’t like all that other shit … math, science, social studies, literature, PE … music was mine. No one gave it to me, and no one could take it away. In this way, as a young idyllic child, I stuck it to the Man, that asshole." It’s impossible to not love a musician with this sort of attitude, isn’t it?

The first instrument that BrEndAn began playing was the guitar and he reveals that his favorite part about playing the guitar is that it “unleashes the proverbial beast” in him.
