Trevor Hall is a singer/songwriter from South Carolina, but there's not a hint of country twang in his speech or his songs. In fact, he sounds like he is from Jamaica, or Africa, or India … or anywhere but South Carolina.
Trevor says that Bob Marley, Bob Dylan, Ben Harper, and Bjork influence him, and his appreciation for diverse artists comes through in his songs. For example, "The Lime Tree" has a slow acoustic feel, whereas "A Sunny Sky" reminds me more of bluegrass, and "31 Flavors" screams BOB MARLEEEYY!
I got pretty addicted to "The Lime Tree" after I featured it on Episode 11 of the show but it wasnt until I saw him live at the Langerado Music Festival that I fell madly in love with him and all of his music. He was one of the first performers of the day, and the night before there was a massive rain storm that left the venue in chaos.
At the time that his set started we were still dealing with the aftermath of the monsoon that provided some really, really, strong wind. You know the kind that is so powerful it knocks you over? That kind. So, he got on stage, everything was blowing all over the place, blowing into the microphone and making that whooossshhh sound, and he was having trouble keeping his balance. Not once did his smile fade.
He and drummer Chris Steel jammed out like nothing was wrong. With as many prissy musicians as there are in the world, it was refreshing to see these two guys savoring the moment despite the poor weather conditions. It was also during this set where I heard the song "Ghosts" for the first time. With lyrics like Dont you know we are the roots that hold this tree/ Feeding the branches and all of its leaves?/ Love and truth, you should always prevail I felt connected with the universe. If it hadn't been for the wireless hub being totally destroyed in the press tent as a result of the rain, I would have bought every album of his I could get my little mittens on right then and there. Instead, I waited for two days.
Trevor has toured with Colbie Caillat and just finished up a tour with Matisyahu. Marc was lucky enough to go see one of Trevors shows in Orlando, meet Trevors parents, and interview Trevor and Chris. You can read his article here.
