There’s a little more time to apply for an eBike voucher from the City of Tampa.
Tampa residents can still sign up to receive up to $3,000 toward the purchase of a new eBike through the city’s lottery-based program.
Last month, the City of Tampa’s parking division reopened the initiative, which provides financial assistance for eBike purchases at participating local bike shops.
With $500,000 in funding this year, officials say the program will provide up to 248 vouchers split into three tiers broken down by income level
- 81 standard vouchers for $1,000 off a new eBike
- 82 low-income vouchers for $2,000 off a new bike
- 85 very low-income vouchers for $3,000 off a new eBike
The program, officials said, aims to offer a safe, affordable option to get around Tampa without a car. The E-bike boom has also led to an increase in injuries, some doctors and cops argue.
Applications for Tampa’s e-Bike vouchers opened Friday, Feb. 13 at 8 a.m., and close Friday, Feb. 27 at 5pm. Tampa Residents may apply at tampa.gov/ebike or in person at the City’s Parking Division offices located on the third floor of the Fort Brooke Garage, 107 N Franklin St..
During the first two years of the program in 2023 and 2024, the program awarded over 450 vouchers for eBikes discounts, according to the City of Tampa.
The voucher is not for a free bike, but rather a set amount that goes toward the purchase of a new eBike, which may cover the full cost depending on the model. The average price of an eBike is around $2,000, with entry-level options starting near $1,000 and high-end models costing $6,000 or more at retailers like REI.
Applicants who receive a voucher may purchase an eBike from seven participating shops:
- City Bike Tampa
- EMOTO Supply Co.
- Oliver’s Cycle Sports
- Outspokin Bicycles
- Tampa Pedego Tampa
- Tampa Bay eBikes
- Trek Bicycle Tampa
Tampa Bay eBikes’ online shop has bikes priced starting at $1,699. A rep at Outspokin Bicycles Tampa told Creative Loafing Tampa Bay that e-bikes there start at $2,700, but average $4,000.
Kevin Craft, founder of City Bike Tampa, told CL that e-bikes at his downtown shop start at $2,800 with most falling in the $3,000-$3,500 range.
“There’s a small batch that are popular in the $5,000-$6,000 range,” he noted, adding that at his shop, employees will walk voucher recipients through the purchasing process.
