Jeff Greene denies going shopping in Cuba: "What would I buy there, bags of rice?"

Campaigning in South Florida yesterday, Democratic Senate candidate Jeff Greene tried to clear up his 2007 trip to Cuba on his yacht Summerwind.  To WPLG television last night, the man who according to polls is leading Kendrick Meek for the Senate nomination, maintained the line uttered by spokesman Luis Vizcaino from the day before that Greene and his fiance were going to Honduras when hydraulic problems forced a detour to Havana for boat repairs.

It's not been a good week for the Greene campaign, as the Palm Beach billionaire "misspoke" as he says during last weekend's Bay News 9 debate that his trip to Cuba had been part of a Jewish humanitarian mission.

Kendrick Meek, on the first day of his 11-day bus tour, said yesterday that whatever the reason for Greene's visit, it was illegal.
