Keep It Grease-y

Once upon a time, the St. Petersburg Shuffleboard Courts played host to thousands of amusement seekers, and, from the 1930s through '60s, the St. Pete Shuffleboard Club boasted upwards of 5,000 members. 'Course, members enjoyed cue and disc action in addition to a slew of social activities, like dancing, card parties, movies and music. Nowadays, members and guests come to play shuffleboard exclusively, and on Friday nights, the place is overrun with hipsters looking for a fun and unconventional way to kill a few hours while meeting up with other like-minded hipsters.

Otherwise known as the St. Pete Shuffle, the weekly event frequently features live music by Bay area bands or DJs, and art by local artists usually hangs on the walls of the clubhouse. "Grease is the Word" at this Friday night's party, with disc play accompanied by the entire soundtrack from Grease beginning at 8 p.m. Shuffleboarders are encouraged to dress up in 1950s attire; the person sporting the best getup earns a $50 Publix gift card.

St. Pete Shuffle, 6-11 p.m. Fri., July 14, St. Petersburg Shuffleboard Courts, 559 Mirror Lake Drive N., St. Petersburg, free, 727-822-2083.
