Beer, in its various forms - from glistening golden ales to malty brown stouts - has been credited with much over the years. Egyptian children were baptized in it, midwives in the 17th century used it to ease labor pains, America’s founding fathers brewed it, the medical community has touted endless nutritional benefits (from stronger bones to a longer-lasting heart) and, according to multiple t-shirts and bumper stickers, the miraculous elixir has been helping thousands of less-than-attractive people acquire sexual partners for well over hundreds of years.

Beer is legal. Beer is fun. And for some, beer is a passion and a way of life.

Every once in a while, a beer comes along at the right time and the right place and effects real change in the world. It is brewed with the spirit of the age and fermented with the pride and strength of the immediate community. In 1778, it was the dark Irish stout of Guinness. In 1876, it was the light Bohemian lager of Budweiser. Now, in 2012, local media company Creative Loafing will release Loafinbräu, a German-style Altbier, brewed in historic Ybor City at the Tampa Bay Brewing Company. And the world will have the privilege of tasting yet another great beer.

For years, during prohibition, Americans consumed watered-down ales and lagers, which has even today weakened the average American palate. So, in the continuing effort to re-strengthen Americans’ tastebuds, mindful brewmaster David Doble has created an Altbier that is golden, yet creamy; malty, yet smooth. Loafinbräu will whisk you away to a waterfall in the mountainous German countryside where you will be surrounded by headiness and immersed in flavor. Simply put, we’re betting that Loafinbräu will be the best beer to be brewed on Earth in the history of the planet. There’s only one catch. Starting in September, there will be a limited amount available and you must attend Creative Loafing’s 2012 Beer Fest in order to get you some.

Creative Loafing Beer Fest will be held on Saturday, Sept. 22, at the Tampa Museum of Art. There will be more than 75 beers to sample, live entertainment by The Black Honkeys and friends, and delectable treats from the legendary Mise en Place. This year also marks the release of our 22nd Annual Best of the Bay issue — which honors the Tampa Bay area’s vibrant art, food and music scenes — copies of which will be available on site. You can also upgrade to the VIP experience, which includes special food pairings, workshops with local brewers, and more — all for only $60 in advance.
