Mitch Perry Report 1.16.13 - Scientology's tough week

This was always going to be a tough week for the PR pros with Scientology.

The much anticipated Lawrence Wright tome on the religion (which we are hoping finally comes in the mail today) called Going Clear was published this week.

In addition to the latest Tampa Bay Times expose (which let's admit was only so-so) on the church, there was also a bit of a media kerfuffle on the Web site of The Atlantic yesterday, which was spanked by critics for publishing an advertorial that looked like regular content.

Tonight a former member of the church, Nancy Many, talks about her experiences with Scientology in a documentary on the Investigation Discovery network. Cl spoke with Many yesterday, where she told us about her experiences with L. Ron Hubbard, and why she believes that a movie like The Master couldn't have been made years ago.

The big news locally was the Hillsborough County School Board's rejection of Superintendent MaryEllen Elia's request for around $4 million in funding to arm all of the district's elementary schools next year.

Across the Bay in Clearwater, the Pinellas County Commission became the latest local government to approve a domestic partner registry.

And the ACLU is supporting the first bill coming out of committee in the Florida Legislature this year - a bill that would limit the use of unmanned aerial vehicles - otherwise known as drones - in Florida.
