There are a lot of ornery 70-somethings in Tampa Bay, but none as socially conscious as Cam Oberting. For nearly three decades, the 74-year-old Seffner resident has fought against landfills, litterbugs and illegal dumping in Hillsborough County. Her tenacity earned her the County Commission’s first-ever Moral Courage Award in 1992, and though she’s been constantly harassed and threatened by the big-money interests she’s up against, Oberting continues to shed light on developers and corrupt government officials. “I’m going to continue what I do,” she says, “and if people don’t like it — too bad.”
