Local original music & national acts

Ale and the Witch Acoustic performances are generally staged in the courtyard directly in front of the tiny watering hole. 111 Second Ave. N.E., downtown St. Petersburg, 727-821-2533, (Capacity: 60 inside, 150 outside).

The Beach Bar Local, mostly jammy-flavored bands play this beachside bar. 454 Madalay Ave., Clearwater Beach, 727-447-4100, (200).

Brass Mug Rock music (mostly harder fare) by local and underground national talent. 1441 E. Fletcher Ave., Tampa, 813-972-8152, (100).

The Bricks of Ybor Occasional live music, once a month or so, nearly all local and free (or close to it). 1327 E. Seventh Ave., Ybor City, 813-247-1785 (170).

Crowbar A club-sized venue that's earned a rep for hosting high-quality indie shows. Local bands headline, provide support and perform in local showcases. 1812 N. 17th St., Ybor City, 813-241-8600, (300).

Café Bohemia A coffee bar that also serves wine, spirits and tasty fare, Cafe Bohemia hosts live experimental, punk and rock music as well as acoustic singer-songwriters and poets on its roomy patio. 937 Central Ave., St. Petersburg, 727-895-449 (150).

Dave's Aqua Lounge The St. Pete staple abounds with character. Blues, Americana and rock featured, mostly local bands with the occasional regional and national acts. 10820 Gandy Blvd., St. Petersburg, 727-576-1091, (75).

Dunedin Brewery Florida's oldest microbrewery hosts live local music three nights a week, with some regional performers; jam, funk, soul, reggae, Americana, blues, roots rock. 937 Douglas Ave., Dunedin, 727-736-0606, (150).

Ella's Americana Folk Art Café A Seminole Heights restaurant and live music spot that's quickly becoming a staple; mostly local and regional bands perform free shows on Fridays and Sundays. 5119 N. Nebraska Ave., Tampa, 813-234-1000, (80 seated indoors; 150 to 200 standing room).

Emerald Bar St. Pete's tiny, convivial bar features mostly local music, much of it harder fare. 550 Central Ave., St Petersburg, 727-898-6054, (75).

Fly Bar Upscale downtown Tampa restaurant and bar that happens to feature live music and DJs several nights a week. 1202 N. Franklin St., Tampa, 813-275-5000, (250).

Fubar A small and smoky bar that caters mostly to local music and welcomes all rock genres with a hardcore inclination. 658 Central Ave., St. Petersburg, 727-424-1809, (120).

The Garden A long-running jazz venue that features an upstairs lobby and downstairs courtyard garden that hosts local vets like Buster Cooper and swinging types like Lounge Cat, along with area singer-songwriters and DJs six nights a week. 217 Central Ave., St. Petersburg, (50ish).

Gasoline Alley A bar and club located in a Largo strip mall once called the "cleanest rock venue in town" by a CL writer; mostly local music, rock and harder. 14042 66th St., Largo, 727-532-0265, (310).

Globe Coffee Lounge The small coffee shop caters to a young crowd with local music (anti-folk, alt acoustic, jazz), usually free. 532 First Ave N. St. Petersburg, 727-898-5282, (40-ish).

Gram's Place Hostel Named for Gram Parsons, the hostel stages intimate acoustic "Front Porch" concerts in its tiny courtyard. 3109 N. Ola Ave., Tampa, 813-221-0596, (40).

The Hideaway Café & Recording Studio The café's intimate stage features mostly local and some regional roots and acoustic rock performers, generally on weekends but also on select weekdays, too. 1756 Central Ave., St. Petersburg, 727-644-7895, (100).

The Hub Bar The beloved downtown Tampa dive and package store hosts live music by locals and area talent. 719 N. Franklin St., Tampa, (100).

Jimmy B's A bar on the beach with locals playing original material amid crowd-friendly covers. Beachcomber Resort, 6200 Gulf Blvd., St. Pete Beach, 727-367-1902, (150).

Ka'Tiki A Sunset Beach mainstay (est. 1982) that features live music most nights a week, much of it acoustic, folk and singer-songwriter fare. 8803 W. Gulf Blvd, Treasure Island, (50ish).

The Local 662 CL's 2010 Pinellas County winner of "Best Venue to See Local Music," The Local 662 features lots of music by quality locals along with regional and national talent. 662 Central Ave., Saint Petersburg, (300).

Market on 7th The tiny pizza joint in an historic market presents live local punk, ska and rock on the weekends. 1816 E. Seventh Ave.,Ybor City, 813-248-2356, (150).

New World Brewery Local, regional and smaller-scale national indie acts of all genres perform on the outdoor terrace. 1313 E. Eighth Ave., Ybor City, 813-248-4969, (200).

Orpheum The dark, dank club has upgraded to bigger and nicer digs directly on 7th, and continues to host local and indie shows of most genres. 1915 E. Seventh Ave., Ybor City, 813-248-9500, (720).

Palladium Theater The regal historic theater run by St. Pete College hosts local and national jazz, blues and cabaret shows, as well as a fine chamber music series. 253 Fifth Ave. N., St. Petersburg, 727-822-3590, (Hough Hall, 849; Side Door Café, 150).

Pegasus Lounge A divey Tampa bar where bikers like to congregate and locals play live music several days a week. 10008 N. 30th St., Tampa, 813-971-1679, (200).

Ramblin' Rose Upcycle A small vintage boutique, gallery and mixed use space that hosts occasional live music events. 683 Central Ave., St. Petersburg, (100ish).

Ringside Café A grubby but charming neighborhood bar that features original local music Thursday through Saturday nights. 2742 Fourth St N., St Petersburg, 727-894-8465, (165).

The Roosevelt 2.0 A mixed-use space and "urban center for social change" that plays host to live and local music. 1812 N. 15th St., Ybor City, (100ish).

Ruby's Elixir A downtown St. Pete bar and self-proclaimed "speakeasy style blues, jazz joint" with live music many nights a week by locals. 15 Third St. N., St. Petersburg, (100ish).

Sacred Grounds A North Tampa coffeehouse staple that has seen all manner of local and regional talents cross its intimate living room-style stage and is celebrating its 15th anniversary this year. Skipper's Smokehouse The tent-covered Skipperdome with picnic-table seating features local, regional and national acts from Americana to world music to funk. 910 Skipper Road, Tampa, 813-971-0666, (800).

Transitions Art Gallery @ Skatepark Of Tampa Caters to the all-ages crowd with local, regional and indie national acts with a punk, hardcore and experimental slant. 4215 E Columbus Drive, Tampa, 813-621-6793, (100ish).
