My baby's got me in chains... and other alternatives to rope bondage

My silk scarves also very practical.  I can pick them up for pennies at thrift stores and a big collection of scarves takes up a tiny amount of space in your house or luggage.  (Not to mention how innocuous a bundle of scarves looks on airport security scanners!)  Finally, they do double duty as fashion accessories or (if you're clever like me) can even be made into garments in a pinch.  On our second date I dressed my slave Tia in a skirt made of silk scarves.

But scarves of course are not the only alternative to rope.  There's also leather shackles & straps, things like duct tape and plastic wrap, the list goes on and on.  I recently started using ordinary metal chain, bought from the hardware store, for bondage purposes and have found it very erotically appealing.  In fact I was surprised by how much I liked it; chains are AWFULLY stereotypical after all.  But the combination of tactile sensations (heavy, cold metal) and the SOUND of the chains clinking as my slave paraded around in them for my entertainment was a huge turn-on.

I know one fellow who loves being bound with veterinary wrap, which is a stretchy, tearable, rubberized material much like ace bandages.  And heck, why not use ace bandages themselves for bondage purposes?  (Bonus fact: when BDSMers use ordinary materials like this for kinky purposes we call them "pervertables".  And it's not at all uncommon to see classes and workshops and even party games devoted to the subject!)

I suppose the object of all this meandering is to illustrate that "bondage" doesn't have to equal "rope".  Like so many other things in the world of kinky sex, there is an endless variety of possibilities to choose from.

I appreciate the look of intricate rope bondage but not really enough to have (so far) applied myself to learning how to do it.  I know the basics and that's enough.  Knowing my personality I think it's possible that my disinterest in rope bondage has much to do with it's massive popularity in the BDSM scene right now.  Anything that's so much of a trend loses some appeal for me.

But fortunately there are other bondage materials available.  For instance, I am fairly skilled in the use of silk scarves and saris for bondage purposes.  I adore using silks for a number of reasons.  For one thing, scarves are so lovely and colorful - a subbie tied up in silk can be such a pretty sight!  And oh, the feeling of silk sliding across skin...it is a fetish all by itself.  Seriously, I remember sticking my bare arms into the racks of silk shirts at the mall back before I was old enough to understand what a "fetish" was, just to enjoy that lovely slippery-warm feeling. And I will still take silk over leather, on myself or my submissive, any day.
