New analysis shows Tampa's credit rating 92nd in the nation

According to Michele Raneri, Experian vice president of analytics, the biggest issues determining the credit score of an American city is high foreclosure rates and high unemployment.


The Tampa Bay area's unemployment rate of 11 percent as of August of this year puts it in a tie for 317 among the top 372 metropolitan regions in the country. The foreclosure rates in the region are also amongst the worst in the nation.

According to an analysis published in USA Today,
Tampa ranks 92 out of 143 U.S. cities in terms of its average credit score.

The analysis comes from the credit bureau Experian. It's the agency's second annual State of Credit list of cities. determined by using the VantageScore credit ranking system. The scores range from 501 to 990 (Tampa came in at 740).

The top city in the study? Wausau, Wisconsin.
