Though he served in office for less than a full year, Harvey Milk has been a gay rights icon for over three decades now. Considered the first openly gay elected public official (though that’s in some dispute), Milk’s legacy has only grown since he was assassinated in San Francisco’s City Hall in November of 1978. There have been schools and operas named after him, and he’s become a hero to a whole new group of gay activists in the wake of the Gus Van Sant biopic of him released late in 2008. Milk died at the age of 48. If he were still alive, he would be turning 80 this Saturday night.
