From Tallahassee to Miami, immigration is driving communities to action, and last Saturday, May 24, activists from a coalition of groups working for immigrants rights, social liberation and indigenous rights groups were outside the Krome North Detention Center, to hold “A Candlelight Vigil for the Voiceless.’

The Florida Phoenix describes Krome as “another ICE facility based in Miami that’s been accused of overcrowding, with people sleeping on floors, poor sanitation, and two detainee deaths earlier this year.”

Last weekend’s action came ahead of of news that more groups are calling for ICE and the Bureau of Prisons to make sure that folks held at the Federal Detention Center 25 miles from Krome are being provided “access to legal documents, legal mail, and access to counsel, which they say is now not the case.”
