Ybor City’s antifascist history came back to life last Tuesday evening when a few dozen activists walked to recreate a 1937 march where more than 5,000 women went from the district to downtown in protest of spreading fascism and inequity.
This week’s march—organized by Progressive Power Collective—went from the Ybor City arch on the western side of 7th Avenue and ended at Centennial Park where protestors listened to artist Michelle Sawyer read from Sarah McNamara’s 2024 book, “Ybor City: Crucible of the Latina South” which tells the stories of women who were change agents in 1930s Tampa.
As previously reported, Sawyer and McNamara combined forces in 2023 to create an Ybor City mural that commemorates the events of May 6, 1937.
The Tuesday March follows May Day protests that took over the district last weekend.
