A documentary chronicling three environmentalists' cross-state trek will finally be broadcast after months in the making on WUSF Public Media, according to a release the outlet sent this morning.
The film, The Forgotten Coast: Return to Wild Florida, follows three friends — conservationist Mallory Lykes Dimmitt, biologist Joe Guthrie and photographer/National Geographic explorer Carlton Ward Jr. — as they make their way from the Florida Everglades headwaters up to the state's border with Alabama on the Panhandle.
Those who have regularly listened to local NPR affiliate WUSF will recall WUSF reporter Steve Newborn's periodic check-ins with the group that were broadcast during All Things Considered.
In all, their journey was 70 days and 1,000 miles long. The three snorkeled in Florida's renowned springs, paddled along critical waterways, trudged through wetlands and even tracked the Florida black bear, an indigenous species that state officials recently — and controversially — cleared for hunting.
They did it all on foot, by bicycle and via paddling, and captured stunning imagery along the way.

The aim of the documentary is to stress the importance of conserving Florida's remaining natural landscapes and waterways that are essential for the survival of the state's diverse wildlife. It comes at a time when environmentalists are struggling against development-driven decisions at the state level and the specter of dramatic environmental changes on the horizon.
"We are proud to partner with WUSF to share with the world the natural wonders we have in Florida. Wildlife habitats and people's ways of life can be protected through the Florida Wildlife Corridor for generations to come. We hope you enjoy the story of our journey and the working lands and wild places it chronicles," Lykes Dimmitt said in a written statement.
The film enjoyed a sell-out crowd at its Tampa Theatre premier recently as well as much critical acclaim and WUSF, a key sponsor for the project, will distribute it to PBS affiliates nationwide.
