A 1997 study found that 153 animal abusers were five times more likely to commit violent crimes than a matched group of 153 non-animal abusers. In order to help combat violence in Tampa, community leaders, child and animal welfare professionals and members of the public meet to explore the link between animal abuse and violence to people. Mayor's Alliance Board Meeting

The Mayor's Alliance for Persons With Disabilities has moved to the third Wednesday of the month. Meetings formerly took place the second Wednesday, but Chairman Norman Mallory felt the day change would result in a larger turnout. Summer Youth Intern Program
The city of St. Petersburg seeks young people ages 14 to 23 who live in the city limits and meet the income guidelines are eligible for the program. The program provides employability/work maturity skills training during the hiring session to all applicants, whether they are accepted into the program or not. Call 727-327-3517.
Free Grilling Hazards Brochure
The American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR) has issued a new brochure, The Facts about Grilling, which advises consumers on the potential health risks of grilling meat, poultry and fish — and provides advice on how to avoid or reduce those risks. Cancer researchers have found that several foods, when grilled, produce cancer-causing compounds, and the brochure is intended to make people aware of how to reduce cancer risk. Lakes Open for Summer Fishing
The St. Petersburg Department of Leisure Services is opening 18 freshwater and two saltwater lakes for the summer fishing season from Memorial Day through Labor Day. The freshwater lakes are stocked with bass, bream, catfish and Nile Perch and are open for shoreline fishing only, though a fishing license is required. No license is required to fish from the shoreline of the salt water lakes. A list of the city lakes being opened is available from the St. Pete Parks Department. Call 727-893-7335.
