Sarasota Republican Party calls Alex Sink's comment on undocumented immigrants "racist"

Conservatives are aflame this afternoon about a comment made by Democrat Alex Sink about undocumented immigrants during her 90-minute CD13 debate with Republican David Jolly and Libertarian Lucas Overby on Tuesday in Clearwater.

When discussing how she believed the House of Representatives needed to pass the Senate bill on immigration passed last year, Sink said the issue was of importance "because we have a lot of employers that rely upon workers … to clean our hotel rooms or do our landscaping.”

The comment was seized upon by blogger Peter Schorsch, who made note of how the reference was not included in the original report of the debate in The Tampa Bay Times. (Nor was it mentioned in our first report of the debate).

Now the meme is spreading, with the Sarasota Republican Party now issuing out an email including the clip with the headline, "VIDEO - Racist Liberal Democrat Alex Sink."

Sink has consistently spoken about her support for immigration reform, though never in such terms. A link at the top of the press release featuring the video includes the line, "Can you imagine the media outrage if a Republican said this?"

It's been an eventful 24 hours in the campaign. On Monday night WTSP-Channel 10 reported that David Jolly had killed a pedestrian in a driving accident when he was 16 years old back in 1989. The Times original headline on the story penned by Adam Smith was titled, "David Jolly Killed A Man." It's now been retitled "David Jolly was the driver in a 1989 accident that killed a man."
