It's winter and even we down here in the Sunshine State are feeling the effects of the season. This time of year means donning many layers of clothing, shoveling snow (where that applies) and giving our home heating systems a workout. But bumping up the temperature on our heating systems can be costly and cause extra carbon emissions from all of those natural resources being burned. What can you do to lower your heating bill and be kinder to the planet, you ask? Luckily, Grist's Ask Umbra has some advice.

According to Umbra, for each degree your thermostat is lowered you can save 1% on your heating bill. It doesn't sound like a lot, but believe me, it can add up. She also suggests turning off the heater when you're away and asleep (just double up on blankets). Insulating gaps in doors, windows and attics can keep the chilly air from creeping into your home.
