During a meeting with his cabinet members at the Tampa Fairgrounds, Florida Governor Rick Scott actually addressed the scandal that's been unfolding around him over the ouster of the state's top law enforcement official.
The governor faces a legal challenge from a collection of news organizations over the governor and cabinet's alleged lack of transparency, a violation of the state's Sunshine Laws, when handling the departure of former Florida Department of Law Enforcement head Gerald Bailey.
Scott said he fucked up, but no worries; he'll use his business acumen to fix it.
While I wanted to bring in new leadership at FDLE as we transitioned into a second term in office, it is clear, in hindsight, that I could have handled it better.
The buck stops here, and that means I take responsibility.
I am focused on working together today on creating a more transparent and predictable process for transitioning Cabinet agency leadership as we move forward.
He then proposed a "fix": an annual performance review for agency heads, so that way if you want to fire someone for, oh I dunno, refusing to investigate someone not suspected of anything so that you don't look bad, or something, you'll need to drum up some other reason for doing so — you know, kind of like how big corporations do their performance reviews.
With this new, more transparent and predictable process, all Cabinet agency leadership, including FDLE, would be up for a review in June of this year. During that review, any member of the Cabinet can make a motion – at our public meeting – for the Cabinet to consider the removal of an agency head and begin a search for new leadership.
You can read the full text of the governor's remarks in more than one place, but here is the only one where you'll find Scott's head superimposed onto the body of House of Cards antihero Frank Underwood. Enjoy.
