The late, great novelist Michael Crichton — also a medical doctor — once wrote that he approaches illness from the belief that we make ourselves sick, if only in order to take responsibility for our own lives and well-being. While I agree in theory, I don't think it's true all the time. Sometimes, the world is sick, and catching.

The governor of Maryland declared a state of emergency after more riots erupted in Baltimore in the wake of Freddie Gray's funeral, and several cops were injured. Nobody in charge seems to be declaring a national state of emergency, however, over the more-than-several young black men who have lost their lives at the hands of the police. Not that we're condoning riots — it's just that we've got a pretty clear illustration here of why they're happening.

The Walmart of outdoor living, Bass Pro Shops, announced it will hold a job fair for openings at its new Brandon location May 18-20. Ready to spend your life reciting the location of and difference between a buzzbait and spinnerbait for less than $10 an hour? Have they got the career for you. (That's it. That's the career.)

The Lightning beat the Red Wings 5-2 in Detroit to force a seventh tie-breaking series finale here in Tampa on Wednesday. A) That's awesome, and B) don't expect to see me anywhere near downtown Tampa after about 4 p.m. tomorrow.

And finally, the Newsome High School Wolfpack Marching Band from Lithia will be heading to NYC to perform in next year's installment of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. That's the 2016 edition of the parade, which shows a lot of optimism considering the amount of time it gives these kids to become tattooed, pregnant smokers in ska-punk bands.
