Many progressives and pols mourned the passing of legislator and activist Helen Gordon Davis. I confess I didn't know much about Davis, the first woman from Hillsborough County to be elected to the state legislature — she lost her seat in the senate to Charlie Crist in '92 — but even cursory research into her life and accomplishments reveals an inspiring figure who never quit working to advance equality. I highly recommend doing a little reading on her; let's not lose her to history.
The Rays beat the Falcons 5-3 in Atlanta. I'd hold off drinking that free victory case of Coca-Cola(tm), compliments of Delta Air Lines(tm) and Turner Networks(tm), if I were you, guys.
A report on employment site Glassdoor's blog puts Tampa at number 28 out of the top 50 cities for jobs — a ranking that comes from a smattering of criteria, including hiring opportunity, cost of living and job satisfaction. Number 1? Raleigh-Durham, NC. Number 50? Riverside, CA. Orlando just barely edged us out, but we did manage to beat New Orleans, San Deigo, Denver, LA and 18 other cities that we only beat because their costs of living are bonkers. (The city with the lowest cost of living? Detroit, obvs.)
And finally, Pasco County deputies have one man in custody and are looking for three more who allegedly lured another man into a house by claiming that man's friend was in danger, then beating him and holding him captive. They call that one "The Hudson Surprise."
