A couple of weeks ago, U.S. President Donald Trump let it be known he would call upon the Department of Health to define a person's gender as their sex assigned at birth. Basically, the gear you're born with would determine who every piece of paperwork you fill out during your lifetime says you are, effectively erasing recognition and enabling all manner of discrimination against any and all transgender individuals.
On Sunday, Equality Florida will hold a rally in support of those individuals — and future trans men and women — as part of the ensuing nationwide #WontBeErased campaign. The organization's TransAction Florida inclusion initiative is calling on all who support everyone's right to self-identification and self-determination and personal freedom to gather for a show of solidarity, and to call attention to the administration's discriminatory inclinations. The event, which includes multiple speakers, begins at 11 a.m. Metro Tampa Bay, St. Pete Pride and Project No Labels are all partnering for this expression of support.
The vagaries of gender identity can be confusing to some, but the bottom line is, the current administration is planning on doing away with civil rights for an entire subset of the population. Does that sound right to you?
