• Pasco County House Republican Mike Fasano

Earlier this week, The Miami Herald's Mary Ellen Klas reported that members of the GOP-led Florida Legislature were likely to adjourn at the end of this year's session next week without having resolved the issue of whether to accept federal Medicaid money to insure the state's poorest residents.

"It's not something you put together in a week," wrote Klas, quoting state Sen. John Thrasher, R-St. Augustine, chairman of the Senate Rules Committee. "It's a very big, complicated issue and these issues take some time."

But there are some, even in Thrasher's own party, who consider such an attitude reckless when the fate of hundreds of thousands of Floridians' healthcare is on the line, such as New Port Richey Rep. Mike Fasano.

Fasano's amendment rewrites a House health insurance bill that matches a Senate plan sponsored by Sen. Joe Negron of Stuart, and no fewer than nine House Democrats have now agreed to co-sponsor it.
