The American Way

Celebrating its longevity with some "All American Fun" (this year's theme, in case you were wondering), the Florida State Fair opens this weekend with its usual assortment of good (but oh so bad) offerings. By this, I mean elephant ears and funnel cakes, colossal corndogs, scary-size Polish sausages, plump gyros, ice cream sundaes and fried everything. (Yes, I would like a deep-fried peanut butter sandwich, but I think I'll hold off on the fried Twinkie, thanks.) Of course, you'll also find: crazy loud barkers; rides of all types, from thrilling to absolutely terrifying; free entertainment (ballroom dancing, bull riding and barrel racing, cheer and dance championships); concerts at the Ford Amphitheater (Lee Greenwood, Felix Cavaliere & The Rascals); special themed celebrations; livestock and agricultural activities and much more.
