The Gaily News: Hillsborough County Commission to reconsider gay pride ban

Legendary South Beach drag queen Wanda, known for her Whitney Houston impersonations, was shot and killed in Tampa Tuesday evening. Wanda, whose real name was Anthony Jerome Lee, was gunned down after answering the door at a friend’s home. Police believe it was a case of mistaken identity.


Meanwhile, a Tampa teenager — Tavares Spencer, 16 — has been charged with a hate crime and attempted murder for allegedly shooting a transgender woman in April.


Could Illinois become the 13th state to legalize same-sex marriage? The Illinois House has until midnight tonight — which is when the legislative spring session comes to an end — to vote on a bill that would extend marriage rights to gay couples. The state Senate passed the bill with a 34-21 vote on Valentine’s Day.

The Hillsborough County Commission is considering lifting a countywide ban on gay pride events and will discuss the matter at its Wednesday, June 5 meeting. The commission originally passed the ban on gay pride recognition eight years ago, in 2005. Openly gay Commissioner Kevin Beckner recently made a motion calling for the repeal of the measure.

Equality Florida is calling for members of the local LGBT community and its supporters to wear red and attend the meeting to support equality. The meeting will be held on June 5 at County Center, 601 E. Kennedy Blvd., Tampa. Arrive at 8:15 a.m. to sign up to speak during the public comment period at 9 a.m. or 10:15 a.m. to attend the meeting and speak during the public hearing.
