The Intern Issue

In which CL’s summer interns write almost everything — and no one has to get coffee.

It’s true — as Tyler Killette reports in her story, nobody had to fetch coffee.

Coffee-fetching, phone-answering, filing — as a rule, none of these are tasks we assign to our college interns (though they do look convincingly over-burdened in Todd Bates’ cover shoot). What our interns usually do is write a lot — listings, blog posts, Do This items, record and movie reviews — as well as support our editorial and marketing departments with research and events. For the students, the experience — and the academic credits — can be quite valuable, a hands-on way to find out whether working at a publication like Creative Loafing is a viable career choice. As for CL, we get to meet some of the area’s best aspiring young journalists — and, in some cases, invite them to come back after their internships to be paid contributors or staffers. (By my count, five members of our current staff are former interns.)

This summer’s crew of nine interns was an unusually large and talented one. So we decided to let them work on an even bigger canvas: their own issue. Almost every story this week was suggested by the interns, then reported, written, edited and in some cases photographed by them, with final edits done by myself and other CL editors.

The interns also wrote about each other — see the author bios that follow selected stories. It’s a varied bunch, as you’ll read, but I can generalize this much: They were all industrious, creative and a pleasure to work with.

So, big congrats to co-editors Killette and Daniel Figueroa IV, Rebecca Bailey, Matthew Drozdeck, Meaghan Habuda, Carly Hobbs, Amina Jackson, Davis Johnson, and Terrence Smith.

You made us proud.
